AECOM reveals plans to launch its PFAS eliminating tech DE-FLUORO™

DE-FLUORO™ will be on display at the company’s booth at the eighth International Contaminated Site Remediation Conference, CleanUp 2019.

AECOM, a multinational engineering firm with a completely integrated global infrastructure, has recently announced that it will launch its DE-FLUORO™, a technology that permanently and effectively eliminates per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), at the eighth International Contaminated Site Remediation Conference, CleanUp 2019 in Adelaide.

Reliable sources claim that the increasing demand for an efficient way to permanently eliminate PFAS has led several AECOM technical specialists to present their results from the DE-FLUORO™ trials, with the DE-FLUORO™ technology being on the display at the company’s booth in the trade exhibition hall.

Speaking on the move, Dr. Rachael Casson, Director of the International PFAS Program, AECOM, said that the features that make PFAS so successful in fire-fighting and industrial processes also make them very tough to eradicate from waste material or the environment.

She claims that currently, PFAS in contaminated liquids or groundwater was either incinerated at a huge cost or stockpiled. Thus, the company has collaborated with the University of Georgia to build a solution that sets up onsite and cuts PFAS-concentrated liquids in a cost-effective and sustainable way.

Casson further added that the firm is now able to assist its customers to fulfill the rigid regulatory requirements that regulate PFAS contamination.

Sources cite that AECOM has been testing the DE-FLUORO™ electrochemical oxidation system for the past year. The positive trials have established that the DE-FLUORO™ electrochemical approach can destroy a wide range of PFAS samples.

Reportedly, during the trials, DE-FLUORO™ managed to eliminate PFAS from groundwater, which was picked from two fire-training sites, Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) concentrate and PFAS-remediated waste solution, as well as PFAS-impacted surface water.

According to Gavin Scherer, Australia and New Zealand’s PFAS response leader, AECOM, the company is finding out new ways to eradicate this contaminant in a cost-effective and safe way and is looking forward to helping clients clean up a legacy of PFAS that has developed over decades.
