Google signs agreement with Engie for 140MW renewable energy supply

Google has recently signed a 140MW renewable energy supply agreement with Engie Deutschland. The utility company will build and manage an energy portfolio to deliver renewable electricity from solar and wind sources in Germany to Google.

The solar power will be obtained from a new 39MW photovoltaic project which will go live in 2023. The wind power will be garnered from 22 wind parks in five federal states that will remain in operation for an extended period to continue producing electricity rather than being taken down at their end of life.

Google mentioned that this portfolio would guarantee that the energy provided to German facilities of Google will be about 80% carbon-free by 2022 when measured per hour.

The energy senior lead of Global Data Centers at Google, Marc Oman, stated that they selected Engie due to its expertise in decarbonization and its ability to transform the delivery of clean energy. He further emphasized that they need cooperation and partnerships with prominent energy companies like Engie, who work together for long-term, sustainable use of energy.

Engie will also provide comprehensive energy management services, comprising the procurement of residual supplies, network management, balancing group management, and more.

Google first started working with Engie through the green Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for five years from offshore wind in Belgium in 2019, followed by a similar agreement in the Netherlands. The latest energy deal was disclosed as Google declared further expansion in Germany, with plans to develop its Frankfurt Cloud region and launch a new Berlin-Brandenburg Cloud region.

A senior executive VP, Paulo Almirante, who is responsible for Renewable and Global Energy Management activities at Engie, mentioned that the company is elated to work with Google again and expand the prevailing partnership between the two companies.

Google has committed to its goal of going green. It recently contributed to a funding round for LevelTen Energy, a PPA (power purchase agreement)-buying marketplace.

The tech giant plans to provide 24/7 carbon-free energy to all its data centers by 2030.
