Panasonic Corporation, a Japanese multinational electronics company, reportedly announced that it will supply more automatic facial recognition gates for an extended number of airports in Japan as well as for the newly extended use in departure processes for foreign travelers.
This additional order will increase the number of automated gates to 203 units across the nation with approximately 123 units assigned to be utilized for foreign nationals.
The company’s face recognition gates were first selected by Immigration Services Agency of the Ministry of Justice in October 2017 and 137 units were put into operation across five prominent airports in Japan. Furthermore, through the additional order, another 66 units will be put into operation starting at Haneda Airport of Tokyo on July 24, 2019 and continue on across seven other airports, including Sapporo New Chitose Airport and Okinawa Naha Airport.
Without requiring previous biometric data registration, the Panasonic system compares photographic information of a traveler’s face in the IC chip that is embedded in the passport along with an image clicked on the facial recognition gate to confirm identity.
The company’s face recognition gates were built to have easy return and departure process based upon a concept of providing a secure, safe and simple solution, wherein both first-time users as well as elderly travelers can go through the gate without frustration, delay or confusion.
The recognition gate has various features such as spatial design that allows optimum arrangement in a restricted space based on field study, intuitive usability due to sophisticated technology and ergonomic design the company has created for passport readers and a high-performance face recognition engine.
Panasonic will continue to provide face recognition gates to Japan at various airports and seaports as the country aims to be a tourism hub by 2020.
