Sony to steer into the electric vehicle space with a new mobility unit

Sony Group Corporation, a Japanese electronics company, revealed that it will create a subsidiary named Sony Mobility Inc. to build on its electric vehicles segment.

The company revealed this during the CES 2022 tech show in Las Vegas, where it presented the Vision-S 02, a new electric SUV prototype. Notably, Sony had first revealed its plans for foraying into the EV sector at CES 2020 and exhibited its Vision-S 01 electric sedan at last year's all-virtual CES.

At a press conference, Sony Chairman Kenichiro Yoshida stated that the excitement they felt after they showed off the Vision-S pushed them to think about how they can apply creativity and technology to improve the experience of going from one place to another.

Yoshida then revealed a proposal to establish an operational business this spring through which Sony aims to explore an entry into the electric vehicle market. He further announced that the company is setting up a new mobility firm, Sony Mobility Inc., to help speed up these efforts, and is looking into a commercial launch of Sony’s electric vehicles.

Sony’s Vision-S 01 vehicle features two electric motors with a combined output of 200 kW and level-two autonomous driving capabilities. In 2021, the company started testing vehicles on public roads. Its electric vehicle platform was built by Magna Steyr, an Austrian car maker, using materials supplied by Bosch and others.

According to Sony, the new SUV will be built on the same EV/cloud platform as the sedan prototype.

It is also worth noting that the electronics company revealed fresh information about its PlayStation VR headset, new display technologies, and a professional photography drone at CES 2022.
